(spoiler alert: don't read this review if you want the story to be a surprise as you read it)Published 20 years after the events described, Jacqueline Donnelly and her husband spent a year in a poorer area near Bordeaux in 1999 as an exchange teacher where she taught middle-school English. Normally she was a French teacher in the US so she was able to fit into the French-speaking world without much trouble. Middle school children can be rough in any setting, but except for one class the rest of the students she taught seemed even more rebellious than normal. As she writes in the epilogue, a friend had told her "France is a garden only for tourists". Ms. Donnelly did make friends among her neighbors and colleagues and had the experiences we all dream about of living in France. But she also saw less laudable sides of France including the way the school was run and the lack of support for many of her students who seemed to need counseling and/or special education placement. Her and her husband exchanged homes with the French teacher who came to the US on the exchange, and Ms. Donnelly had a deteriorating relationship with her. One thing I didn't like so much about the book was even though it is in chronological order, the early chapters keep dropping hints that something unpleasant lurks ahead that she wishes she had recognized. I found that a bit distracting; she didn't realize things at the time for the most part and so it draws away from the story to read thru an account colored by the future. After all the glowing reviews, I had high expectations for this book. But I was sharply disappointed. It seemed like the author focused so much on the negative aspects of her experience. Her criticism of Monique got tiring after a while. Rather than being open to the experience of being in France, it felt to me as though she were constantly trying to re-create the American experience. An expat myself of 24 years, I can sympathize with many of her struggles and dilemmas. But I felt that the author was always wanting approval, always trying to prove how good she was, always feeling insecure. Partway through the book, I went back and reread the reviews to see if I was actually reading the same book. I hope that the author was much happier when she was back in her home territory.
